摘要：亨利.詹姆斯的《女士画像》表现了生活中的唯美主义倾向与道德的关系,本文根据奥斯卡.王尔德和詹姆斯关于艺术与生活的关系的理论,指出那种试图将生活纳入到艺术的完美形式的唯美主义倾向必将与自由冲突;根据约翰.罗斯金关于“伊希斯”(Aesthesis)和“斯利亚”(Theoria)的理论,分析小说中的人物用唯美的精神看待生活的道德后果,说明以自我为中心、仅追求感官享乐的审美方式与道德的背离,而伴有情感付出的审美才是道德的。
This paper studies the relationship between aestheticism and its moral consequences in The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James. Resorting to Oscar Wilde＇s and James＇s idea of the relationship between art and morality, it shows how the aesthetic tendency to shape life in the form of art can be morally dangerous when it conflicts with freedom. Moreover, the paper studies the aestheticizing vision in the novel and its moral significance by means of John Ruskin＇s distinction between Aesthesis and Theoria, revealing that the selfcentered aestheticising vision aimed at sensual pleasures is against morality, whereas the aestheticizing vision with emotional involvement constitutes the moral perception of beauty.
