摘要：本文根据沃尔夫冈.伊瑟尔的读者反应批评理论研究亨利.詹姆斯晚期的作品《鸽翼》。伊瑟尔提出了"空白"(blank)的概念,指文本结构中的不确定点,意味着文本符号间看不见的潜在联系会引发读者的思维建构行为。在《鸽翼》中,詹姆斯的叙述省略了很多重要的信息和场景,形成了许多伊瑟尔意义上的"空白",读者在阅读过程中必须参与到文本中,填补这些文本中的空白。同时,伊瑟尔认为,文本的意义存在于阅读的过程中,文本本身是一个潜在的"空白",读者的阅读将潜在的"空白"转换为意义。在《鸽翼》中,主人公密丽的人生展现为一个"空白",只具有潜在的意义,是她与他人的交往赋予了她的人生以意义,这在象征意义上体现了伊瑟尔关于文本、读者与意义之间的关系。
This paper studies Henry James＇s later work The Wings of the Dove in the light of Wolfgang Iser＇s reader response theory. Iser initiates the conception of ＂blank＂, one basic structure of indeterminacy in the text. Blanks are the unseen joints of the texts, which trigger acts of ideation on the part of the reader and thus set in motion the interaction between the text and the reader. In The Wings of the Dove, important information and scenes are withheld from the reader, leaving blanks in the text. The readers are expected to fill in the blanks, and thus involve themselves in the interaction with the text. Moreover, according to Iser, the meaning of a piece of literary work lies potentially in the text, which can be realized only in the process of reading. This theory is also dramatized in The Wings of the Dove through the heroine Milly Steale. Milly＇s life appears firstly as a blank, and it is through her communication with others that her potential is concretized into meaning.
