基金:This study is based on Chapter 7 of Chen's doctoral thesis submitted to Waseda University library in2013, and it also incorporates the results presented in Harless's working paper (in 2018). The authors thank Tsuyoshi Adachi, Xiang Han, Peng Liu, Takashi Oginuma, Koichi Suga, Qianfeng Tang, WilliamThomson, Jun Wako, Huaxia Zeng, Yongchao Zhang and seminar participants at SUFE, 2012 Japanese Economic Association Autumn meeting, and ISDG 2017 for their helpful comments. This research is supported by The National Natural Science Foundation of China (No. 72273043). Patrick Harless, one of the authors, sadly passed away in 2020. This happened right after we agreed to combine Chen's doctoralthesis and Harless's working paper in 2018. Harless's name being kept in the paper implies not only that this paper includes his academic contribution, but also that we cherish the memory of him forever.

摘要:This study considers the problem of random assignment of a set of objects to a set of agents based on strict ordinal preferences of the agents. We analyze the fractional Boston rule, which is a generalization of the classical Boston rule to random assignment environments. We introduce two new axioms-stochastic dominance (sd)-rank-efficiency and equal-rank envy-freeness-which are respectively efficiency and fairness conditions that respect preference ranks. Sd-rank-efficiency implies ordinal efficiency, which is an efficiency concept defined by Bogomolnaia and Moulin (J Econ Theory 100(2):295-328, 2001) for random assignment environments in the sense of first-order stochastic dominance. Equal-rank envy-freeness implies equal treatment of equals. Sd-rank-efficiency and equal-rank envy-freeness characterize the fractional Boston rule.
