The mental well-being of teenagers is significantly correlated with famil-ial educational aspirations. This study extends the research on educational aspirations and mental health of teenagers to focus on depression, exploring the effects of unmatch-ing parent-child aspirations on teenagers'depression and the mediating role of child-rearing approaches.Employing multilevel linear regression analysis on the two waves of the China Education Panel Survey,we discovered that there is no linear correlation between depression and unmatching parent-child aspirations.Teenagers are more prone to depression when their parents'educational aspirations markedly diverge from their own.Subsequent analyses indicate that parental emotional support, family material as-sistance,and the rigidity of parental discipline serve as mediators linked to reduced de-pressive symptoms in groups with matched and matched-high aspirations compared to those with matched-low aspirations. These mediators function as protective buffers against depression for teenagers experiencing moderate upward or downward unmatch-ing parental-child aspirations. Therefore, the primary risk jeopardizing the mental health of teenagers is not the absolute levels of aspirations but the significant unmatching parental-child aspirations.
