Plot is the central part of modern narratology. In Poetics, one of the earliest western literary criticism, Aristotle proposes the concepts of reversal and recognition in plot, claiming that they are the most important elements for constituting a good plot in tragedy. This paper, from the aspect of Aristotle's literary theory, discovers that James, in his three representative works - The Portrait of a Lady, The Wings of the Dove and The Golden Bowl, employs the Aristotelian technique of reversal and presents recognition in various ways as summarized in Poetics, revealing James's narrative art in plot construction.
