摘要:Traditional methods for modifying benzoxazine generally increase the toughness at the expense of the strength of the material. In this study, amide bonds were introduced into a main-chain-type benzoxazine to improve the toughness of cured materials, thereby addressing the balance between toughness and strength. This study investigated three main-chain-type benzoxazine monomers, Bz-bpa, Bz-oxy, and Bz-dia, each containing a different number of amide groups, resulting in a different number of additional hydrogen bonds. The polybenzoxazine, PBz-dia, which contains three amide bonds per repeating unit, exhibited a tensile strength of 107 MPa and an elongation at break of 3.8%; these values were 197 and 100% higher, respectively, than those of conventional bisphenol A-type polybenzoxazine and 55 and 23% higher than those of PBz-bpa, respectively. The results revealed that the introduction of amide bonds improved both the strength and toughness of polybenzoxazine and slightly improved the thermal stability of the cured material. This study demonstrated that changing the strength of the hydrogen bonds in polybenzoxazine by changing the number of amide bonds can balance the strength and toughness of a polybenzoxazine; this approach is instructive for toughening studies involving other thermosetting resins.
