摘要：George Steevens等莎学专家将莎士比亚作品中的"Cataian"一词与"小偷"和"骗子"等联系起来,这不仅影响了几个世纪以来西方莎学界对中国人形象的负面解读和由此带来的偏见,甚至也导致了中国译者对此词的片面翻译。事实上,无论是基于历史语境对"Cataian"汉译的文化考察,还是基于莎士比亚作品对文本语境进行细致分析,结果都表明部分西方学者将莎士比亚作品中的中国人形象与"小偷"和"骗子"等负面形象联系起来是荒谬的、断章取义的和不符合史实的,乃至不无种族中心论基调,这在新的时代也不利于文化交融和平等对话。
George Steevens among others associated ＂Catalan＂ in Shakespeare＇s works with negative images such as ＂thief＂ and ＂liar＂, which has not only influenced some Western Shakespearean scholars who therefore misread the image of the Chinese and show prejudice against them for centuries, but also lead to some Chinese translators＇ misunderstanding of the image. Actually, The cultural study of ＂Cataian＂ based on the historical context as well as close reading of Shakespeare＇s texts indicate that this kind of prejudicial and ethnocentric assumption of the Chinese is ahistorical and misleading, which will not contribute to cultural communication and equal dialogues.
