Foucault’s theory of discourse/power can effectively elucidate Ophelia in Hamlet and Du liniang in The Peony Pavilion, who, respectively living in a man-dominated world, strive to share the power of discourse only to realize it in abnormal situations. The way they endeavor to share the power of discourse and the corresponding effect reflect their self-awareness based on different cultures. Ophelia’s madness, to some extent, is a passive way to resist masculine domination by self-destruction while Du liniang realizes self-sublimation when she unites with her true love after her resurrection and deconstruction of masculine power of discourse.
