摘要：唐纳德·巴塞尔姆的短篇小说《气球》可谓美国后现代主义小说的典范之作。本文通过对《气球》的文本隐喻的解读,挖掘看似无意义的文本内隐藏的主题和内涵。一般认为《气球》在形式上运用了文字游戏、拼贴画等各种后现代写作手段,展示了荒谬和无意义的反叛精神。但是,当我们把《气球》整个文本看成一个隐喻之后,文中各种表面上互不关联的描述就显现出其内在的联系,而这个看似小说的文本也呈现出批评文本的各种特征。因此,本文认为这部短篇小说跨越了小说文本和批评文本的界线,反映了作者对后现代主义艺术理论和创作实践的思考。
Donald Barthelme was one of the widely read postmodernist writers, whose short story ＂The Balloon＂ was frequently anthologized due to its typical postmodernist features. Much has been written about the form of this story; the present essay, however, intends to analyze its critical nature. Reading the story as an extended metaphor, this essay discloses the inherent relations among the seemingly absurd fragments and word plays, thus drawing attention to Barthelme’s critical views about postmodernism. It could be argued that ＂The Balloon＂ exemplifies a meta-fictional blurring of fiction and criticism.
