Corporate social responsibility( CSR) is a critical issue for multinational enterprises( MNEs). The literature suggests that internationalization degree promotes MNEs’ CSR,while others report opposite findings. The inconsistence of the relationship between internationalization degree and CSR needs more explanation. Further research suggests that MNEs ’ CSR closely relates to host country institutions and economic development. However, for emerging market multinationals( EMNEs), questions are still underexplored such as whether host country institutions promote CSR,how host country economic development influence CSR,and what’ s the joint effects of host country institutions and economic development. Using sample of Chinese listed multinationals in manufacturing industry, this article aims to find out the influence of host country institutionalquality and market size on an EMNE’ s CSR. Results show that host country institutional quality enhances EMNEs’ CSR,but host country market size reduces CSR, and further negatively moderates the relationship between institutional quality and CSR. The findings suggest that although EMNEs are forced to perform higher level of CSR by higher institutional pressures from host countries, they have to reduce CSR due to fierce market competition in host countries with larger market size, which further weakens their responsiveness to institutional pressures abroad.
