摘要：沃尔特·佩特是19世纪英国唯美主义理论奠基人,其代表作《文艺复兴》因宣扬为艺术而艺术以及艺术至上而招致严厉批评。佩特并非完全将艺术与道德分离,在《文艺复兴》之后的作品中力图说明唯美主义原则与道德的一致性。本文首先阐明佩特的相对精神,在此基础上解释其唯美主义理论的真正含义,继而分析其唯美主义与道德精神的一致性。
Walter Pater,the founder of British aesthetic theories,upheld in his work on Renaissance the principle of "art for art's sake"and the superiority of art,which aroused ferocious moral attacks in his time.However,he was never able to get rid of his moral consciousness. This essay,by explaining Pater's"relative spirit"as well as the core idea of his aestheticism,tries to demonstrate how his aesthetic theories contributed to "higher morality".
