摘要:A stirring shaft was connected to a flange through an interference fit, and connection ends were joined together using a fillet weld. Fracture occurred in the shaft, initiating from its surface inside the flange rather than contact edges. Material inspections, including both chemical composition and metallographic analysis, confirmed that the shaft material complied with the required specifications. Wear marks were visible on the contact surface between the shaft and the flange. The fracture exhibited a macroscopically smooth appearance with evidence of slight ductile tearing. Beach marks and fatigue striations were observed on the macro and micro scales, respectively. The fatigue crack initiation sites at the geometrically continuous surface (i.e. inside the flange) were discussed in depth from the perspectives of fracture mechanism, numerical simulation and design. The fracture failure was attributed to fretting fatigue, caused by an improper design and fabrication of the shaft-flange connection. To prevent the occurrence of such failures, a forged shaft-flange design should be considered to enhance structural reliability.
