摘要：在哲理小说《伊壁鸠鲁主义者马里乌斯》中,佩特借助对伊壁鸠鲁主义和斯多葛主义等古典哲学的解读,阐释唯美主义理论的深层内涵,消除世人对《文艺复兴》的误读。赫拉克利特主义和伊壁鸠鲁主义构成了佩特的唯美主义理论基础。伊壁鸠鲁主义式的唯美主义有助于获得正确的认知方式,培育洞察力;它倡导的并非及时享乐,而是阿诺德式的对完满的追求,促进勤奋的人生;伊壁鸠鲁主义的快乐伦理符合人性。斯多葛主义为伊壁鸠鲁主义生活方式提供道德支撑,伊壁鸠鲁主义与斯多葛主义的相互靠近体现了唯美主义哲学的开放与兼容精神。本文从伊壁鸠鲁与斯多葛哲学的角度分析《伊壁鸠鲁主义者马里乌斯》,揭示了佩特的唯美主义理论与赫拉克利特主义、昔兰尼主义、伊壁鸠鲁主义和斯多葛主义等古典哲学之间的渊源,说明他的理论不仅限于艺术和审美领域,而且扩展为对人生意义的哲学探索。
In Marius the Epicurean,Walter Pater elaborates on classical philosophies of Epicureanism and Stoicism to explain the philosophical significance of his aesthetic theories and eliminate people's misreading of Renaissance.Heraclitism and Epicureanism constitute the theoretical basis of Pater's Aestheticism.Epicurean Aestheticism helps to obtain the correct way of cognition and cultivate insight.It advocates not the pursuit of pleasure,but the pursuit of perfection in the sense of Arnold and leads to an industrious life.The Epicurean justification of happiness accords with human nature.Stoicism provides ethical support for the Epicurean way of life.The compatibility between Epicureanism and Stoicism embodies the open spirit of Paterian philosophy.This essay traces the theoretical basis of Pater's Aestheticism back to classical philosophies including Heraclitism,Cyrenaicism,Epicureanism,and Stoicism,indicating that Pater's theory is not limited to the fields of art and aesthetics,but serious philosophical exploration of the value and meaning of life.
