摘要：Setting up new majors is vital for a university's development. East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST), Shanghai, People's Republic of China, had launched its Oil-Gas Storage and Transportation Engineering (OGSTE) major in December 2001. The new major was developed on the basis of the old petroleum refining major. With a clear instructive principle and four years of effort in the field of sound education construction and management, a characteristic brilliant petrochemical teaching mode was gradually formatted. The major is aimed at fostering students' knowledge, capabilities and character simultaneously. A solid foundation, broad future employment chances and practical emphasised programmes were addressed. The main efforts focused on four aspects: an energetic education team with high academic degrees and a reasonable age distribution, supervision by one professor with a responsibility to the major; a curriculum that emphasised practical elements, including interaction between teaching and research, experimentation, training and graduation processes; a good and positive learning ethos; and launching the Masters degree OGSTE education programme to elevate the level of the major.
