This article has been retracted at the request of the authors. After carefully rechecking the strains used for Figures 4b-e and 5, it was noticed that the complementing strain ΔesrR+ was wrong and inappropriately used. Although the phenotypes of the deletion mutant strain as well as the transposon insertion mutant were consistent, the authors could not obtain the expected wild-type level of T3SS expression and production with the reconstructed ΔesrR+ strain. Thus it cannot be concluded that ETAE_2184 (EsrR) is the bona fide regulator of the virulence gene expression. There exists the possibility of a polar effect, i.e. the neighboring ETAE_2185 being the real virulence regulator for T3SS expression, or other unknown mechanism through which esrR modulates virulence in E. piscicida. In order to avoid any inconvenience or misleading conclusions in the future, the authors decided to retract the paper and the Editor-in-Chief approved this decision.
