摘要:The rheological behaviour of four complex formulations of creosote-based wood-preservative emulsions has been studied. The four samples comprised two water-in-oil emulsions, one stabilized with titanium dioxide and one with iron oxide pigment, and two oil-in-water emulsions stabilized likewise one each with the same pigments. Although the relative compositions of the four emulsions were similar, their formulation and processing were complex and consequently their rheological properties differed considerably. All four emulsions exhibited shear-thinning characteristics, but the degree of shear-thinning diminished with increasing temperature. The steady-shear viscosity data can be represented by the modified Quemada model. The oil-in-water emulsions were also more elastic and exhibited larger yield stress values than the water-in-oil emulsions. In the water-in-oil emulsions sedimentation occurred upon prolonged standing, while the oil-in-water emulsions exhibited marked changes in rheological behaviour at high shear rates. The physicochemical structure of the oil-in-water emulsions changed continuously with time during shear. Multiphase globules of increasing size and structural complexity appeared in the continuous phase.
