摘要:The efficiency of membrane separation processes relies on the performance of fluid flow across the membranes. Herein water transport across carbon nanotube membranes is investigated by means of non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. Particularly the interior/exterior surface wetting effects on water flux are examined. We find that the hydrophilic interior and exterior surfaces can both suppress water flux, while the underlying mechanisms are different. Specifically, hydrophilic interior surface promotes the water density inside the nanopores, causing severe two-layer distributed structure, and meanwhile, the annulus layer near the surface becomes packed and ordered, greatly reducing the slipping length; while the hydrophilic exterior surface increases the entrance/exit resistance and suppresses the molecule diffusion near the interface, thus interfering the permeation of water molecules into the membrane. This study provides molecular insights for enhancing water permeation by surface modification of membranes. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
