Feasibility of coagulation/flocculation/sedimentation (CFS), carbon adsorption and CFS plus carbon adsorption for advanced treatment of a biotreated coking plant wastewater were determined. The CFS treatment alone was feasible and cost effective in producing an effluent meeting the reuse standard for cooling water (COD〈100 mg/L). Effectiveness of carbon adsorption was dependent on both the carbon type and influent quality. The adsorption treatment of a biotreated sample using either coal or fruit nut based activated carbon also produced an effluent of COD〈100 mg/L; however the cost was much higher. The CFS+carbon adsorption treatment process, which employs the CFS step to remove high molecular weight organic constituents of the feed followed by the adsorption step using a low cost coal based activated carbon to remove the residual organic pollutants, was an attractive advanced treat- ment process for producing a final effluent that may be reused for many beneficial purposes (COD〈50 mg/L).
