摘要:A conventionally developed silver image can be intensified by copper physical development. The microstructure of the final image was studied by transmission electron micrography, The distribution of copper and silver within the final image was studied by x-ray photoelectron spectrometry combined with Ar+ ion sputtering. The final image composed by silver and copper was in a branched form rather than a filamentous one. The copper content increased, whereas the silver content decreased, with the depth. A shift of the binding energy of Ag 3d to a lower value was found, showing that the silver in the interior of the image was in both monoatomic state and polyatomic state, but the silver at the image surface was exclusively in a monoatomic state. This conclusion was confirmed by computer deconvolution of the x-ray photoelectron spectrum of Ag 3d. If the time of copper physical development is long enough, copper win completely cover silver. From then on the copper physical development continues because of the autocatalysis of newly formed copper.
