Theromodesoprtion, as physical remediation process, has unique properties such as simple design, high efficiency and short duration, and can be used to treat volatile and semi-volatile contaminated soil. In this contribution the BTEX-contaminated soil was considered as the research object, the influence of temperature and heating time on BTEX's desorption were studied, and the influence of BTEX's boiling point and molecular weight on its removal efficiency was explored. The results showed that the saturated vapor pressure of BTEX increased with temperature, leading to an enhance in volatilization. By using the first-order decay model the thermal desorption of BTEX exponential decay constant was calculated, showing that temperature and heating time can directly affect the desorption process. Compared with degradation of each BTEX compound, it was found that it was more difficult to parse out for the contaminants with the bigger molecular weight and the higher the boiling point. The results in this contribution confirmed that thermal desorption of BTEX could be enhanced by increasing the soil temperature, which could lay the foundation for the carrying out thermally enhanced vapor extraction experiments.
