摘要:High-quality potassium octatitanate (K2Ti8O17) whiskers were successfully synthesized by reaction of rutile TiO2 with stoichiometric K2CO3 from KCl melt at 760-800 degrees C. The characterization results from Xray diffraction and Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed single-phase K2Ti8O17 whiskers with highly crystalline nanostructure have been obtained. The scanning electron microscopy combined with transmission electron microscopy showed the well dispersive K2Ti8O17 whiskers have a uniform length ranging from 5 mu m to 10 mu m with 40-80 nm in diameter. Selected area electron diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy indicated the K2Ti8O17 whiskers have grown preferentially along the [010] direction. According to UV-vis absorption spectrum, the direct band gap of the K2Ti8O17 whiskers was estimated to be 3.31 eV. Furthermore, the K2Ti8O17 whiskers have shown good photocatalytic activity in the photodegradation of methyl orange under ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V.
